Cabinets and Countertops

Frequently Asked Questions About Cabinets & Countertops in the Bay Area

Q: What is the difference between cabinet refacing and cabinet refinishing?

A: Cabinet refacing replaces the doors, drawer fronts, and external visible surfaces (with veneer or laminate) while keeping the existing cabinet boxes. It is a cost-effective way to get a new look without a full replacement. Cabinet refinishing (painting or staining the existing surfaces) is more affordable and works well when the cabinet boxes and doors are structurally sound but the finish has worn out. Q: How long does countertop installation take?

A: After you select your material, most countertop jobs are templated, fabricated, and installed within 2 to 3 weeks. Stone countertops (granite, quartz, marble) are measured on-site after old counters are removed, then custom-cut at the fabricator before installation. The actual installation day typically takes 4 to 8 hours depending on kitchen size.

Q: Which countertop material is best for a Bay Area kitchen?

A: Quartz is the top choice for most Bay Area homeowners because it is non-porous, requires no sealing, and is extremely durable. Granite offers a natural look and good heat resistance but needs occasional resealing. Marble is beautiful but softer and prone to staining, so it is better suited to low-traffic areas or baking stations. We help you compare options based on your cooking habits, aesthetic preferences, and budget.

Q: Can you match new cabinets to existing ones in a partial remodel?

A: We can often match finish colors, door styles, and hardware to existing cabinetry. For painted finishes, this is relatively straightforward. For stained wood, an exact match depends on the species, age, and original stain formula. We do a sample match before committing to the full job so you can approve the result before we proceed.

Q: Do custom cabinets take longer than stock or semi-custom options?

A: Yes. Stock cabinets from major suppliers can be ordered and installed in 2 to 3 weeks. Semi-custom cabinets typically take 4 to 8 weeks from order to install. Fully custom cabinets built to exact dimensions with specific woods, finishes, and features can take 8 to 12 weeks. We discuss lead times upfront so you can plan your remodel timeline accordingly.

Q: What cabinet hardware do you recommend?

A: Brushed nickel and matte black are the most popular hardware finishes in the Bay Area right now; both hold up well and complement a wide range of cabinet colors. Soft-close hinges and drawer slides are highly recommended for any remodel because they protect the cabinet boxes and dramatically extend the life of your cabinetry. We source hardware from quality suppliers and can show you samples during your design consultation.
